Sept 4

Quietly waiting for my shuttle to be called I tried in vain to ignore the (stereotypically) NY jewish lady in near scream mode to her relative on the phone. “yes, I know–I had a great time in the city honey; thanks so much. I hope you guys had a good time as well. I love you honey, it was a great trip and I had a great time and I miss you”  Repeat at loud voice mode in the middle of the waiting area.  I had her pegged for one of the elite shuttle destinations…..
As the lady behind the counter pointed at me telling me and a couple of others we were set to go I popped out my headphones as the shuttle pickup spot echos something fierce and I sure don’t want to end up at the wrong end of the state.
Shuffling around there she was—NY jewish lady heading for the same shuttle–help me.   Given the holiday weekend a full ride was expected–and we were not to be disappointed.  I squeezed into one of the back rows and right next to me….you got it; she sat. I was trapped for the remainder of my trip; determined to pull out something to read, keep my headphones in and head down. That worked great for the first 15 minutes until I realized the entire first 15 minutes the 40-something guy behind me hadn’t stopped yapping to the two 20-something guys next to him. He yapped incessantly about anything–everything. Primarily everything about himself.  To these two clearly uninterested college guys simply looking to have a good time over the holiday weekend. Non-stop. Please make it stop.
Fortunately fatigue won out and I dozed in and out for a number of miles and coupled with the distraction of a magazine and the radio I reduced him to little more than an annoying loud buzz. Until 30 minutes from our destination–the lady fired up her phone and picked up where she left off in the waiting area. ‘Yes honey, it’s your mother. I know you have company coming–are they there yet? I just wanted to call to tell you I had a great time in the city, I love you, I’m about 30 minutes from home and I love you. I’ll let you go because of your company–but I wanted to say hello again’. Make it end.
