It’s Been….One Week….

….since I set up shop and started setting up new routines. In that time I’ve:
  • obtained a new driver’s license
  • registered to vote
  • verified my truck must undergo emissions testing (which it’ll never pass) so
    • working on figuring out how to beat the system
  • validated information needed to set up a new AMPS+ PO Box in the state
  • hauled (yet another) truck full of goods to Goodwill
  • organized all bike equipment in the garage
  • organized my closet
  • taken 4 naps
  • hit the farmers market
  • grilled three times
  • survived two Monsoon storms
  • watched a coyote make his way from the back yard through the front then across the road
  • visited my cousins who live in the neighborhood–they’re such nice folks!
  • set up my home office
  • signed up my first extended term AMPS+ client (this one comes with a pool which I learned how to maintain)
  • ordered a pile of upgraded interior doors to stain/paint/install
  • looked into a solar lighting solution to lighten up the hall
  • almost convinced Dennis the contractor (from Wisconsin) to take up road cycling again
  • logged about 30 running(jogging) miles; average temp being 99 degrees.

 Whew!

Now, about that average temperature.  Contrary to common belief it’s not always a dry heat. For anyone who believes that they clearly have not spent much time in the desert during the Monsoon. Relentless triple digit heat plus humidity make the Monsoon season unexpectedly uncomfortable for anyone expecting hot but dry. Desert dwellers learn to cherish the Monsoon as its pattern of humidity and wicked storms supply most of the moisture of the year. The season also has an effect on outdoors activities. For example; the group with which I’ve started running had a 4:50 a.m. weekend start–that’s right; 4:50a.m. For me to meet them at today’s northern starting point would have required getting up a little before 4:00. I opted to skip the group and hit a local mountain park with trails: Sweetwater Preserve. This system of multi-use trails is phenomenal. Horses, dogs, mountain bikers, hikers, bird watchers, multiple species of critters and the occasional jogger all dot the nearly 800 acres of jagged rock, loose sand/gravel challenging trails. Comparable to Blair Witch and that series of trails–minus the dirt and shade. For a solo run I’d be challenged to find a better option. It looks a little like this: (note the Mule Deer).  All in all a rather busy week~~ I’ll take it.
