The Coke bet is done. Lofti doesn’t know it yet; but after the last week or so the Coke’s out of reach for him. Upwards of 400 miles through the first week of May is way more than he can make up. It’s almost not been fair as well over 1/2 my miles have come from the fair weather of the southwest. On the upside it seems as if my results are trending for the better. Unfortunately I’ve only managed to repeat a couple courses a couple of times so it’s not a great comparison but the general trend is favorable. Heart rate down, distance and speed up.
Leg seems to have plateaued a bit again, regaining form but not so much in the strength department. Really the only way to get the strength built back is single-leg exercises—hard core, not dips and lunges. Doc (on April 26) says weights, weights, weights. About the most effective, efficient way is single leg lifts. Blech. I’ve taken a few spin classes where it’s relatively simple to spin hard on one leg, easy on the other but that’s still not as effective as pure single leg strength training. Doc also slipped in his reminder that this is a six month re-training process as well as a reminder to ride all I want–no running. We’re now just short of 11 weeks post-op; and probably five weeks since I’ve even attempted a slog-trot-really fast walk. His rehab protocol calls for the possibility of a jog in the 14-week range; we may give it a low-key shot again by this weekend. A ton of things to do around the house have proven to be a great distraction; a two-ton pile of yard rock out back should serve the trick for the next couple of afternoons/evenings.
